Noortje IJssennagger studied Nutrition and Health at the Wageningen University, the Netherlands. Thereafter, she started her PhD project at Wageningen University, and she revealed how red meat consumption increases colon cancer risk. Being fascinated by host -microbe interactions and intestinal health, she pursued her career as Postdoc at the University Medical Center in Utrecht. There she investigated the role of the bile salt receptor called the Farnesoid X Receptor (FXR), in liver and intestine. After obtaining several (personal) grants, she could establish her own independent research line aiming to understand the interplay between bile acids, microbiota, mucus barrier function and gut health to aid in novel approaches for therapy of diseases such as Inflammatory Bowel disease. In 2021 she joined Danone Nutricia Research, where she is currently working as senior scientist in the Gut Biology Team. Noortje published in peer-reviewed journals in the field of nutrition, GI and liver physiology and microbiology, and was invited as speaker at several national and international conferences.
