Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery
Jarek Maciaczyk is an academic stereotactic and functional neurosurgeon with long-standing clinical interest and expertise in interventional treatment of chronic pain, movement disorders and intracranial tumors applying minimal-invasive image-guided approaches. After graduation from Collegium Medicum of Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun, Poland in 2001 he joined Dept. of Stereotactic Neurosurgery at the University Hospital in Freiburg, Germany for research (Prof. G. Nikkhah) as well as clinical (Prof. Ch. Ostertag, Prof. J. Vesper) training. He completed the neurosurgical residency program in Dept. of General Neurosurgery (Prof. J. Zentner) and after habilitation joined Prof. J. Vesper at Dept of Functional Neurosurgery, University Hospital in Düsseldorf, Germany as senior consultant. In Düsseldorf he continued his research interest in cell-based therapy of neurodegenerative disorders and experimental neurooncology. He also led the stereotactic oncology and radiosurgery program. Following short clinical and research activity as associate professor and consultant neurosurgeon at the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand in 2020 he returned to University of Bonn, Germany as clinical professor and chairman of Dept. of Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery. His research interests encompass the translational aspects of molecular biology of malignant gliomas, molecular basis of chronic pain, minimal-invasive image-guided interventions and reconstructive neurosurgery.

STIMULUS research group
As a neurosurgeon and focusing on functional neurosurgery, I founded STIMULUS (https://stimulus.research.vub.be/en) , not only as a sole research group, but also as a group of experts in their field with a common focus: the "whole" patient. In 2013, I promoted (PhD) with my thesis titled:“Functional neuroimaging in patiënts with failed back surgery syndrome treated with spinal cord stimulation: The investigation of supraspinal effects of spinal cord stimulation”. After achieving my PhD, my main interest evoluted towards treating chronic pain patients via neuromodulation. Now as principal investigator in several projects, my role changed into supervising these research projects, teaching, managing and public speaking.

My name is Alba Maria Vivas and I am a registered vocational nurse in Madrid at the Rey Juan Carlos University. I have more than 5 year of experience in chronic pain nurse management alongside Dr. Abejón. We carry out our daily practice in the QuirónSalud Madrid Hospital, Ruber Juan Bravo Hospital and QuirónSalud San José. Together with my team, we provide assistance, follow-up and support in pain therapy. In relation to patients with neuromodulation device, we ensure we educate the patients prior to neuromodulation treatment, emphasizing the patient´s selection and anticipation of the therapy to ensure greater effectiveness. On the other hand, intraoperatively, we implement the surgery together with the medical team and lastly, postoperatively, we program and monitor our patients with electrode implants.
