Family and Community Medicine. Rural medicine. Emergency Department.
My name is Leire Fernández Izaguirre, I was born in 1993 in Bilbao (Spain). Since I was little I always wanted to be a doctor, and in 2011 I entered the Faculty of Medicine at the University of the Basque Country. After six hard years of study and clinical practice at Basurto´s Hospital and Quirón Hospital in Bilbao, I presented my final degree project "Therapeutic adherence in psychotic disorders and associated factors", finally achieving my dream of becoming a doctor. In 2019, I started the medical specialty of Family and Community Medicine through the MIR exam. Currently, I have been training for two years as a resident doctor at the Regional Hospital of Alcañiz (Teruel), working in the different hospital services, the general emergency department and in health centers in rural areas.

I was born in Porto and grew up in Espinho, a small town on the coast of Portugal. I divided my life between two passions: dance and medicine. I've danced all my life and had the opportunity to teach dance too. However, I always knew I wanted to be a family doctor. The doctor of the beginning, the course and the end of life. The person, family and community doctor. I studied medicine at the University of Minho in Braga, and life brought me to Torres Vedras, a small and cozy town near Lisbon. Currently I live here and complete my internship at a Family Health Unit. Recently I developed a particular interest in issues of sexuality, intimacy, gender identity and sexual orientation, so I decided to pursue a postgraduate degree in Clinical Sexology and Couples Therapy which I completed last here. Along with medicine, I love people, conversations and travel.
