Francesco Zanetti is a serial entrepreneur involved within radiation therapy field since 2008, when LIAC project was purchased. As of then he implemented an investment plan to industrialize the manufacturing of the IOeRT systems while boosting the R&D activities focused on developing new technologies. As of 2018 he’s focusing his efforts on the development of new electron based FLASH technologies.

Dr. Zhang's laboratory currently investigates the molecular mechanisms of the sparing effect of the ultrahigh dose rate FLASH radiation, especially in the context of immune checkpoint inhibitor-based tumor immunotherapy. Based on the study of PD-L1 knockout mice exposed to whole abdominal irradiation of FLASH X-ray, Dr Zhang's group finds that FLASH irradiation is less efficient than conventional dose rate (CONV) X-ray in eliciting cytoplasmic double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) and in activating cyclic GMP-AMP synthase (cGAS) in the intestinal crypts, resulting in the suppression of the cascade feedback consisting of CD8+ T cell chemotaxis and gasdermin E-mediated intestinal pyroptosis. Therefore, Dr. Zhang's group proposes the “DNA integrity” hypothesis to elucidate the mechanism of the FLASH sparing effect, suggesting that “relatively intact DNA integrity” within normal cells during the “instantaneous” IR exposure is critical for FLASH X-ray in sparing PD-L1–deficient mice from detrimental events.

Dr. Jennifer Wei Zou is an Associate Professor in the University of Pennsylvania. She obtained her Ph.D. from the Department of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics in Cornell University. She then completed a MS degree in Medical Physics and residency training in University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Zou has extensive clinical and research experience working with synchro-cyclotron and cyclotron proton machines. She is currently active in the FLASH RT research to understand its radiobiological mechanisms and clinical applications.
