Erinn B. Rankin, Ph.D. Assistant Professor of Radiation Oncology Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology Erinn is an Assistant Professor of Radiation Oncology (Radiation Biology) and of Obstetrics and Gynecology (Oncology). Erinn received her PhD from the University of Pennsylvania with a focus on Cellular and Molecular Biology. She has received numerous honors and awards including the J. Martin Brown Award for Outstanding Achievements in Radiation Sciences from Stanford University, the Gabilan Faculty Award from Stanford University, the Ovarian Cancer Academy Award from the Department of Defense, and most recently was awarded the Carol and Doug Kimmelman Faculty Scholar from Stanford University. The Rankin lab focuses on identifying and developing therapeutic strategies for cancer therapy. They are particularly interested in developing targeted therapies that exploit hypoxic signaling in the tumor microenvironment as well as utilizing cutting edge radiation therapy treatment modalities to improve outcomes in patients with advanced metastatic disease.

Dr Francesco Romano is Researcher at the Italian National Institute for Nuclear Physics. His expertise is on radiation dosimetry and Monte Carlo simulations for medical applications. His research activity is currently focused on ion beam microdosimetry and dosimetry for hadron therapy, FLASH radiotherapy and laser-driven ion beams. He is Honorary Lecturer at the Queen’s University of Belfast and University of Surrey in UK.

I am a PhD student in the University of Manchester’s proton research group, based at The Christie Proton Beam Centre. My research is focused on trying to improve understanding of FLASH radiotherapy, and parameterise the mechanisms which may lead to a normal tissue sparing effect.

In 2019 I was appointed as beam line scientist of prontontherapy centre of Delft, HollandPTC. In 2016 I did a post doc with the Italian Institute of Nuclear Physics on “nuclear interaction of therapeutic proton beam with matter”. Between 2013 and 2016, I performed my PhD thesis at the Technical University of Darmstadt within GSI, focusing the work on the physical characterisation of Helium ions for application in cancer treatments, especially suited for paediatric patients. For this work I won two prices one in Germany and one in Italy. My main goal is to build a research beam line which can support different type of research from advanced technology to animal irradiations. Pre-clinical research is of key importance for the evolution of the technology and the proton treatment. The experiments can be tuned and selected in the R&D beam line and then brought into the patient gantries. My goal is to build a beam line that can mimic a therapeutic beam but can offer way more flexibility in terms of irradiation and setup. Equip the proton beam line of HPTC in order to become one of the main facilities around the world is my ultimate goal. Research needs to be always one step ahead from reality, imagination is what brings progress.
