Abstract

Objectives

The purpose of the study is to identify the factors related to therapeutic relationship for persons with mental illness.

Methods

There were two groups of subjects participating in the study. There were from a medical center and a community setting where all subjects attended the day care service. All subjects signed informed consent before they joined the study. One group of subjects participated in the study which focused on the therapeutic relationship for individual situation. The other group of subjects participated in the study which focused on the therapeutic relationship for activity situation. There were 29 and 20 subjects joined the study prospectively. 4 therapists participated in the study, We collected data on symptom severity, cognitive capacity, participation and therapeutic relationship using PROMIS-depression, anxiety, anger, sleep disturbance and sleep related impairment scale; Tai-Da symptom checklist, MMSE, Pittsburg rehabilitation participation scale and Pan’s therapeutic relationship scale.

Results

The results showed that no matter what group the subjects were, there were significant differences on therapeutic relationship scores between therapists and clients which the therapists rated consistently higher than the clients’ ratings. There was significant relationship between participation and therapeutic relationship for both groups. There was significant relationship between symptom severity and therapeutic relationship for anxiety, depression and sleep disturbance.

Conclusions

The results of the study provide insight to decompose the complexity of the role of therapeutic relationship on therapeutic outcome. Future research aiming on larger sample size are guaranteed.
