Abstract

Objectives

This paper describes the implementation of Food Bank Project by CPS Unit. The project aimed to evaluate patients’ unmet need especially on food supply, network with relevant organization, and facilitate the distribution process.

Methods

The foodbank idea was started in September 2019 when CPS unit received donation of food packs for our patients. When COVID-19 pandemic started, we decided to continue the program. There are two types of food packs: basic food pack (for individual patients) and essential food pack (containing dry items such as rice, canned sardines, and cooking oil for households with food supply issues). For each cycle, the steps were broken into Collection, Coordination and Distribution. Initial funding and food contributions were provided by local social enterprise (named “Bowtang”) and Non-Governmental Organization (NGO). Subsequently, food contribution also came from private companies. In June 2021, we secured 3-monthly food supply from a foodbank foundation.

Results

A total of 150 patients benefited from this project. Three cycles were completed: fourth quarter of 2020 and first and second quarter of 2021. For each cycle, 150 basic food packs and 25 essential food packs were successfully distributed. The program received good feedbacks from patients and their carers.

Conclusions

This project had successfully created a better community engagement as it is an important step in community-based initiatives. This Food Bank program also offers a dual strategy of giving practical assistance while establishing a better therapeutic alliance with patients and their carers.
