Josephine van de Maat is a medical doctor from The Netherlands. Last year, she defended her PhD research, titled “Childhood Pneumonia. Clinical decision support in the emergency department”. She performed epidemiological research in pediatric infectious diseases in the Sophia Children’s Hospital, Rotterdam. The main aim of her research is to improve decision-making on diagnostics and treatment of fever and respiratory infections in children. Currently, she is working as a postdoctoral researcher in infectious diseases and global health in the Radboudumc, Nijmegen. In this position, she is part of an international consortium working in Tanzania and Uganda, giving her the opportunity to extend her research to the setting of low-and-middle-income countries.
Dr Lieke van den Elsen is a researcher with expertise in the role of early life nutrition on the gut microbiota in allergic and metabolic disease. After completing the Bachelor of Pharmacy and the research master Drug Innovation at Utrecht University (the Netherlands), she continued this research during her PhD project in the laboratory of Prof Johan Garssen. The project focussed on the impact of fish oil on food allergy and cardiovascular disease prevention in animal models and human infants from the Salmon in Pregnancy Study. In 2013 she moved to the Malaghan Institute of Medical Research in Wellington, New Zealand to study the role of the gut microbiota and dietary components in early life for optimal immune development. In 2018 Lieke joined the team of Prof Valerie Verhasselt at the University of Western Australia to work on the role of early breastfeeding practice in immune homeostasis in animal models and human birth cohorts.

Post-doctoral researcher at the Immunology Unit of the Department of Biomedical and Clinical Sciences “Luigi Sacco”, University of Milan, Italy. I’ve started my research activity in 2014 when I obtained a Ph.D. fellowship in Experimental and Clinical Pharmacological Sciences at the University of Milan. Currently, my main research interests are focused on the study of the immunological responses occurring during infectious diseases. Namely, the target of my research projects is the study of the specific immunological memory generated by vaccines in HIV-positive young patients, and are aimed at realizing more specific vaccination plans in these subjects. From March 2020, most of my work is focused also on SARS-CoV-2, precisely on to study of the immunological profile in a cohort of SARS-CoV-2-infected children with different clinical manifestations and on the specific immune responses elicit in HIV and SARS-CoV- 2 co-infected subjects. Moreover, I have been involved in many different projects related to SARS-CoV-2 infection.
