Abstract

Objectives

This study aims to investigate the prevalence of histrionic and dependent personality disorders among Turkish patients treated at the NPZR as well as to analyze the relationship between the above-mentioned personality disorders and demographics of the participants such as gender, income, education, employment as well as marital status.

Methods

A total of 175 patients (46.3%, n=81 and 53.7%, n=94) were randomly selected for this research. Their ages ranged from 25 to 71, with a mean of 52.1 (SD=7.77). Histrionic and Dependent personality disorders among Turkish female patients were assessed, diagnosed by the Structural Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis Disorders (SCID-II). The valid and reliable version of the SCID-II was performed, approved by Sorias et al., 1990.

Results

Even though female participants showed higher rates of dependent personality disorder (57.1%), gender of participants is not correlated with histrionic disorder (p>0.05). Furthermore, there is a significant relationship between income level of the participants and demonstrating DPD symptoms (p=.002). Prevalence of DPD among patients with lower income was higher.

Conclusions

In line with previous research, dependent personality disorder is mostly observed in female patients and participants with lower income. Furthermore, histrionic personality is not correlated with female gender (p>.005).
