Stephanie M. Levine, MD, FCCP, is a Professor of Medicine with tenure in the Division of Pulmonary Diseases and Critical Care Medicine at UT Health - San Antonio, in San Antonio, Texas. She is board-certified in internal medicine, pulmonary disease, and critical care medicine. Dr. Levine received her undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania and her medical degree from the George Washington University School of Medicine, where she was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. She completed her Internship and Residency in Internal Medicine and Fellowship in Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine at the New York University-Manhattan Veterans Administration-Bellevue Hospital Program in New York City. Dr. Levine is the Program Director of the Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship at UT Health San Antonio, and was the former Medical Director of the Lung Transplant Program at the same institution. She is currently the Co-Director of the Medical Intensive Care Unit at the University Hospital. She also is a staff physician in the South Texas Veterans Health Care System. Dr. Levine has authored or co-authored over 280 manuscripts, chapters, reviews, editorials, and abstracts, primarily in her major field of interest, lung transplantation. Her other areas of interest include pulmonary and critical care issues in pregnancy and women’s lung health and eosinophilic lung disorders. Dr. Levine has held many leadership positions in the organization, including Editor for both CHEST SEEK Critical Care Medicine and Pulmonary Medicine editions. She has chaired the Education Committee, the Council of NetWorks, the Pulmonary Board Review Course, and was co- chair of the Scientific Program Committee. She has been active in CHEST international activities with CHEST World Congress meetings in Shanghai and Bangkok, the regional meeting in Athens, the 2017 Basel Joint CHEST/SPG Congress in collaboration with the Swiss Lung Association, and with the pulmonary/critical care subspecialty training programs developed in China. In 2009, she received the CHEST Presidential Citation Award; in 2010, the CHEST Distinguished Service Award; and in 2017, the Master Clinician Educator Award. She has also been recognized as a Distinguished CHEST Educator each year since its inception since 2017. She was President and Chair of the CHEST Foundation from 2010-2014 and served on the CHEST Board of Regents and Board of Trustees. Dr. Levine served as the 82nd President of CHEST for the 2019-2020 term and is the fifth woman to lead the organization. She recently was appointed as the Deputy Editor for Contributor Equity and Experience for the CHEST journal.

Occupational and environmental dust exposures such as asbestosis, silicosis, and hard metal lung disease continue to plague certain populations of workers, many who are years away from the initial exposure. This session offers a brief review of common interstitial lung diseases associated with inhalations of dust and other compounds resulting in interstitial lung disease and provides clinical updates on evaluation and management.

Description:

CPAP remains the most effective therapy for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea, yet adherence to PAP therapy is suboptimal for many patients. This will be a case-based interactive session focusing on approaches that improve adherence to PAP therapy. The session will address patient and clinician barriers to instituting PAP therapy, predictors of PAP nonadherence and interventions that have been shown to enhance PAP therapy. The session will also review the role of various PAP modalities on PAP adherence and outcomes.

Learning Objectives:

• List predictors of CPAP adherence.

• Understand why patients don’t utilize PAP therapy as prescribed.

• Define strategies that may improve PAP adherence.
