Left Atrial Appendage Closure: From RCTs to Worldwide Implementation
PFOs: To Close or Not to Close
Abstract
Abstract Body
Patent foramen ovale (PFO) is a prevalent cause of ischemic stroke and transient ischemic attack (TIA) in young adults. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have shown that PFO closure is associated with a 59% relative risk reduction in the risk of recurrent ischemic stroke. As such, the number of PFO closure procedures is expected to increase. There are certain stroke patients who may benefit from PFO closure that were not sufficiently represented in clinical trials. Dr. Sposato will address uncertainties in the management of patients with ischemic stroke and TIA beyond data from randomized clinical trials
