Luca received his DVM from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Pisa (Italy) in 1994. He developed his career as a microbiologist in Denmark, where he completed his PhD in Veterinary Microbiology at the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University in 2000 and became Professor at the University of Copenhagen in 2012. Since 2018 he also works part-time for the Royal Veterinary College in the UK. Luca is a proficient researcher in clinical and public health microbiology with over 200 peer-reviewed publications. His main areas of expertise are antimicrobial resistance and antimicrobial therapy in animals. He is a pioneer of antimicrobial stewardship in small animal veterinary medicine and participates in numerous national and international working groups dedicated to development of clinical guidelines for rational antimicrobial use. Among his honorary offices, Luca is the chair of the Therapeutic Guidelines Group in the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA), vice-chair of the Scientific Advisory Board in the Joint Programming Initiative on Antimicrobial Resistance (JPIAMR), and Science Officer of the Veterinary Microbiology Group in the European Society for Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID).
