Chief Medical Officer
Dr. Mike McFarland was appointed executive vice president and Chief Medical Officer (CMO) in November 2020. In this role, Dr. McFarland serves as a leading voice of our customers inside and outside the company. Previously, Dr. McFarland served as group president, Accelerated Growth Businesses, where he looked after a portfolio of Zoetis businesses, including Global Diagnostics, Genetics, BioDevices, Precision Livestock Farming and Platinum Performance. Dr. McFarland received his undergraduate degree in Animal Science from Texas A&M University in 1980 and his DVM from the College of Veterinary Medicine at Texas A&M in 1985. Before joining Pfizer Animal Health (now Zoetis), he was an associate in a companion animal hospital for 10 years. In addition, he has 15 years experience in emergency medicine, including 5 years as the Medical Director for one of the country's first after-hours emergency practices in Dallas, Texas. During his corporate career, he led veterinary services and medical operations at Pfizer Animal Health and Zoetis, and he later moved into marketing leadership roles for companion animals and livestock in the U.S. Dr. McFarland served as Head of U.S. Cattle Marketing and Marketing Operations for Zoetis and had played a similar role for the U.S. Petcare business during a four-year period of key product launches and growth. Dr. McFarland serves on the board of directors for American Humane. He is also one of the Founders, and President of the board of trustees, for the Human Animal Bond Research Institute. In addition, Dr. McFarland was one of the co-founders for the International Veterinary Academy of Pain Management. He was honored as an Outstanding Alumnus of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Texas A&M University in 2012 and received the National Humanitarian Medal from American Humane in 2016.
