Eva Hellström Lindberg is chair of the Center for Hematology and Regenerative Medicine, encompassing 17 research groups. She is a member of the Nobel Assembly and Committee at Karolinska Institute and director of the strategic research area “Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine Karolinska Institute. She was president for European Hematology Association 2005-2007. She received the Jose Carreras award in 2017, and the Wallenberg Clinical Scholar Award 2018. The experimental part of the research program focuses on pathogenesis and therapeutic targets in MDS and is pursued along three lines: 1. Molecular epidemiology (DNA and RNAseq) in MDS. 2. Stem cell and erythropoiesis studies of SF3B1 mutated MDS with ring sideroblasts (MDS-RS). 3. Molecular MRD monitoring of MDS after stem cell transplantation These studies are made possible by a large MDS biobank encompassing DNA, RNA and cryopreserved cells from the MDS clinic at Karolinska University Hospital and from the Nordic Clinical trials. Patients undergo a detailed annotation and follow-up and are genotyped with regard to currently identified candidate gene mutations. The clinical trial program (Nordic MDS group) encompasses phase I - III clinical trials, and is associated with an elaborate biobank program. In Sweden, this program is linked to the Swedish Cancer Registry quality system, and similar registries are currently developed in the other Nordic countries. The MDS group is actively engaged in a number of productive international collaborations. Eva Hellström-Lindberg is active within several large international consortia with focus on MDS
