NARRATIVE DIARIES IN AN ITALIAN PICU: PRELIMINARY RESULTS OF A PILOT STUDY ON FEASIBILITY, DIARY UTILIZATION AND PARENT SATISFACTION
Abstract
Background and Aims
Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) diaries are commonly used in the UK, Ireland and northern Europe for admitted children. The aim of this pilot study is to describe the feasibility, utilization and parent’s satisfaction with PICU diaries in an Italian PICU.
Methods
Children intubated and sedated for ≥48 hours with an Italian speaking caregiver were included in this observational study. A narrative diary was provided at the child’s bedside for caregivers and healthcare providers to write in. At 30 days from PICU discharge parents were interviewed and rated the utility and satisfaction with the diary on a Likert scale from 0-10. Descriptive analysis was performed on diary utilization and parent’s satisfaction.
Results
A total of 13 PICU diaries were compiled from August to December 2020. Children had a mean age of 8.5 years (SD=6.6), 85% (n=11) were male, the mean length of mechanical ventilation and PICU stay was respectively 8 (SD=6) and 14 (SD=9) days. Mean diary entries were 16 (SD=10) and 47% days had at least one entry. Most frequent entries were from caregivers (n=95; 45%) and from healthcare providers (n=52; 25%). Parent’s satisfaction and diaries’ perceived usefulness of the diary was high (mean 9/10 ± 1). The diary was useful for parent’s emotional expression and to establish a more trustful relationship with healthcare providers.
Conclusions
Preliminary results suggest that the PICU diary is an applicable and useful tool. Participation of the whole healthcare team and family members are key for the success of this intervention.
