Henkjan Verkade is a paediatric gastroenterologist/hepatologist at the Beatrix Children’s Hospital of the University Medical Centre Groningen, the Netherlands. He obtained his PhD in Medicine cum laude at the University of Groningen on the thesis titled ‘Lipid absorption and metabolism’. Prof. Verkade was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada. In 2005, he was appointed as Professor of Paediatrics (Gastroenterology/Hepatology) at the University Medical Centre Groningen. Prof. Verkade combines clinical work in paediatric gastroenterology/hepatology with clinical and fundamental research projects. His current research projects involve intestinal lipid absorption and metabolism, enterohepatic circulation and paediatric liver disease (familial cholestatic syndromes, biliary atresia, liver transplantation). Prof. Verkade initiated the global NAPPED registry (NAtural course and Prognosis of PFIC and Effect of biliary Diversion) in 2017, alongside Dr Bettina Hansen, and the prospective global TreatFIC database in 2022. The NAPPED registry has been helpful to further characterise the natural history of progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis syndromes and identify prognostic parameters for the course of disease and responsiveness to treatment. Prof. Verkade has authored more than 300 peer-reviewed publications and more than 15 book chapters. Since 2019, he has been Associate Editor of the Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition.
