Professor of Obesity, Diabetes and Endocrinology
Professor Rachel Batterham OBE FRCP PhD Professor Rachel Batterham is Professor of Obesity, Diabetes and Endocrinology at University College London (UCL) and Honorary Consultant at University College London Hospital (UCLH). She leads the UCL Centre for Obesity Research and is the Royal College of Physicians’ Special Advisor on Obesity. In 2022 she was awarded the honour of Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) by HM Queen Elizabeth II for her services to people affected by obesity. She has also received several national and international awards for her obesity research That has played a critical role in gut hormones being developed as treatments for obesity (Nature 2002, NEJM 2003, Nature 2007, JCI 2013, Diabetes 2020, NEJM 2021, Lancet 2021). Her papers have been cited >27,000. She contributed significantly to defining the clinical management of patients living with obesity through her membership of various professional bodies and guideline committees including the NICE Obesity Guideline Development Group. She is passionate about reducing the stigma that people with obesity experience and ensuring that the patient voice is heard and has established a charity for people affected by obesity, Obesity Empowerment Network UK.
