Abstract

Background and Aims

Vascular calcifications including aortic valve calcification is related with worse cardiovascular outcomes. Breast artery calcification (BAC) is associated with cardiovascular diseases and can be detected easily by mammography which is recommended routinely for cancer screening in women aged over 40 years. We aimed to assess the relationship between breast artery calcification (BAC) and aortic valve calcification.

Methods

All the patients who underwent both mammography and coronary CT angiography in Hacettepe University Hospital between January 2010 and December 2016 were screened and patients with duration more than 12 months between CT and mammography were excluded.

Results

A total of 320 women were included and baseline characteristics were listed in Table-1. BAC was detected in 47 (14.6%) patients while aortic valve calcification (AVC) was detected in 191 (59.7 %) patients. Median aortic calcification score (Agatston score) was significantly higher in patients with BAC than without BAC (5.9 vs 0.5, p< 0.001). Aortic calcification was present in 37 (78.7 %) patients with BAC, while AVC was present in 154 (56.4%) (p:0.007). Median peak aortic valvular gradient was 7.84 (6.76-11.25) mmhg in patients with BAC and in patients witthout BAC median aortic valvular gradient was 6.81 (5.76-9.00) mmHg, (p=0.022). Correlation analysis showed that there is not any correlation between the values of AVC and BAC (p=0.877). table-1.jpg

Conclusions

Vascular calcifications including breast artery calcification and aortic calcification are related with each other and poor cardiovascular outcomes. Aortic valvular calcification is more frequent in patients with BAC but the severity of AVC is not correlated with BAC severity.
