Abstract

Background and Aims

Cardiovascular diseases are still the leading cause of mortality in all over the world. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women and screening with mammography is recommended in women aged over 40 years. Breast artery calcification (BAC) is associated with cardiovascular diseases. We aimed to evaluate the association between breast artery calcification and cardiovascular risk factors, cardiac CT findings, cardiovascular risk predicting scores and all cause mortality.

Methods

All the patients who underwent both mammography and coronary CT angiography in Hacettepe University Hospital between January 2010 and December 2016 were screened and patients with duration more than 12 months between CT and mammography were excluded. Datas were obtained from electronic database retrospectively.

Results

A total of 320 women were included and BAC was detected in 47 (14.6%) patients (Table-1). BAC was correlated with age, CT coronary calcium score , SCORE and SCORE Turkey. Both the severity of coronary artery stenosis and CT coronary calcium score was distinctly higher in patients with BAC than without BAC (Table-2). The absence of BAC is a strong predictor of the absence of severe coronary artery disease. Median SCORE (3 vs 1; p<0.001) and SCORE Turkey values (6 vs 2; p<0,001) were significantly higher in BAC (+) group. BAC was independently associated with all cause mortality after excluding patients with breast cancer.figure-1.jpgfigure-2.jpg

Conclusions

Breast artery calcification is associated with cardiovascular risk factors, CT coronary calcium score and cardiovascular risk predicting scores such as SCORE and SCORE Turkey. Additionally, BAC is a predictor of all cause mortality.
