Dr. Beatriz Monteiro is an enthusiastic veterinarian passionate about research for the benefit of animals. After graduation from Sao Paulo State University (Unesp - Botucatu), Brazil, she moved to Canada where she completed two internship programs at the University of Guelph and obtained a PhD on chronic pain from the University of Montreal as a Vanier Canada Graduate Scholar. More recently, Dr. Monteiro received an Advanced Certificate in Feline Behaviour from the International Society of Feline Medicine (ISFM) and a Postgraduate Diploma in International Animal Welfare, Ethics and Law (IAWEL) from the University of Edinburgh. Dr. Monteiro is a licensed veterinarian in Quebec, Canada working as a research advisor at the University of Montreal in the laboratory that developed, among other things, the Feline Grimace Scale. At the same time, she works in partnership with the industry and is currently enrolled in a residency program of the American College of Animal Welfare. With nearly 60 publications in respected scientific journals, her research focuses on the assessment and treatment of pain in animals for improved welfare. She has authored several book chapters and lectured in some of the most important veterinary meetings in over 10 different countries. Dr. Monteiro is the chair of the World Small Animal Veterinary Association - Global Pain Council (WSAVA - GPC) and is part of the editorial board of the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery (JFMS) and JFMS Open Reports. She works to advance pain management and promote animal welfare worldwide.
