Symmetric dimethyl arginine (SDMA) is an endogenous biomarker of glomerular filtration rate; Being, it is an analyte that comes to complement the other markers that are used in daily clinical practice, such as serum creatinine and urea. In no case, should it be considered a test superior to the others, and much less unique for the diagnosis of kidney disease, since its value must be interpreted with the results of the other analytes.
It is useful in the early diagnosis of chronic kidney disease; but that can also be altered by pre or post-renal causes, such as dehydration, the presence of lymphosarcoma, and urethral or ureteral obstruction; making the need to have a protocol for taking samples and interpreting their results, avoiding diagnostic errors.
