Cynda Crawford, D.V.M., Ph.D. Fredrica Saltzman Endowed Professorship Chair in Shelter Medicine Maddie's Shelter Medicine Program Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine crawfordc@ufl.edu www.ufsheltermedicine.com Dr. Cynda Crawford is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Shelter Medicine and Director of the Maddie’s Shelter Medicine Program at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Crawford earned a PhD in Immunology/Infectious Diseases from the University of Florida College of Medicine in 1984 and the DVM degree from the UF College of Veterinary Medicine in 1989. She also holds MS and BS degrees from North Carolina State University. Her areas of expertise include canine and feline infectious diseases and evaluation of diagnostic tests and vaccines for infectious diseases. She focuses on assisting shelters with diagnosis and management of viruses and bacteria that commonly cause respiratory infections in shelter dogs, including canine distemper virus, influenza virus, pneumovirus, Bordetella bronchiseptica, and Streptococcus zooepidemicus. She was instrumental in identifying the H3N8 canine influenza virus and among the pioneering researchers into the disease epidemiology and subsequent development of a vaccine.
