Johan obtained his Bachelor of Veterinary Science from the University of Pretoria in 1991. Thereafter he spent 7 years in private practice in the UK before returning to academia in 1999, first at Cambridge University in the UK and then at Onderstepoort near Pretoria in South Africa, where he is now full Professor of small animal medicine and former Head of Department. Johan has been teaching all aspects of small animal internal medicine over the past 20 years, particularly concentrating on endocrinology and cardiology. He holds specialist recognition in small animal internal medicine from the South African Veterinary Council, the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in London, as well as the European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine. He also completed a PhD at Cambridge University on the endocrine response to critical illness and served as head examiner of European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine from 2008 to 2010. He is the current Chair of the Internal Medicine specialty of ECVIM. He has supervised 20 Masters and PhD students, published 80 peer-reviewed scientific papers and 12 book chapters and is a regular speaker at international conferences and CPD events. He has a particular interest in diagnostic ultrasound to expedite diagnoses in internal medicine.
