Session Description
This symposium addresses the consequences for adolescents of the use of social media and other online behaviors in their brain development, social and sexual behavior. The adolescent brain undergoes profound structural changes which is influenced by many factors. Screen media activity (SMA; e.g., watching television or videos, playing video games, or using social media) is a common recreational activity in children and adolescents; however, its potential consequences are not well understood. Prof. Weinstein will review the evidence which supports the behavioral addiction model of Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) by showing structural and functional changes in the mechanisms of IGD including reward and craving. Using the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) cohort, a longitudinal study involving over 11,000 youth, Prof. Potenza will present brain-behavior findings from analyses of longitudinal data on potential consequences of SMA on brain development. Prof. Thibaut will talk about early exposure to sexually explicit media and their relationships with risky sexual behavior in the emerging adulthood and their potential role in further sex offending.

Session Description
The Covid-19 pandemic, and its devastating effects on our societies and economies, illustrate how much society needs to rely on women, whether on the front lines or at home. At the same time, this crisis highlights the structural inequalities that exist in everything from health and economy to security and social protection. In times of crisis, when resources dwindle and institutional capacities are stretched, the situations women and girls face have disproportionate impacts, and their effects are amplified during pandemics, conflicts or emergency. The hard-won achievements in terms of women's rights are also under threat. The response to the pandemic is not only about improving long-standing inequalities, it is also about building a resilient world for the benefit of all, where women are at the center and help in the recovery. F. Thibaut will present the European perspective during the pandemic and data on women's mental health during the pandemic. J. Madi-Skaff will talk about the impact of the Covid 19 on Women’s Health in the MENA region. Chonnakarn Jatchavala will present data on policy and real practice of women's mental health amidst the pandemic in Thailand and South Asia. A Faerden will discuss the Scandinavian experience of Covid 19 and Women's Mental Health.

Session Description
Women’s mental health requires important attention due to genetic and neuroendocrine factors that contribute to the pathogenesis of mental disorders, gender-related vulnerabilities during critical periods of life circle and different responses of females to pharmaceutical treatments. Furthermore, women’s mental health occurs in the context of social phenomena, notably violations of women’s rights and the persistence of violence against women, as well as the special circumstances of female patients with mental disorders and female health professionals working as frontline staff during the COVID-19 pandemic. This symposium focuses on the aims of promoting gender-sensitive and autonomy-enhancing mental health services for women. The talks will address a range of linked topics, namely (i) activities of the International Association of Women’s Mental Health towards investigating major psychosocial problems that women encounter across the world, and ways to protect women’s mental health in the face of psychosocial challenges; (ii) vulnerabilities of females to develop anxiety and depression associated with a history of mental disorders, now exacerbated due to the pandemic-related stresses; (iii) use of pharmacogenetic approaches in specifying the efficient, evidence-based treatment of depressions in women; (iv) bringing the WPA and WHO recommendations for opposing violence against women into clinical practice, with application to the daily life of female patients with mental disorders and female health professionals. To conclude, our international team aspires to formulate actionable resolutions of key recommendations for protecting and improving women’s mental health, based on current progress in neuropsychiatry research and lessons learned about psychosocial stressors arising from pandemic.
