Abstract

Objectives

The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of cognitive-behavioral group therapy and group metacognitive therapy in Iranian students with social anxiety disorder.

Methods

The present study was a double-blind randomized clinical trial. Using convenience sampling from 368 people using Connor's social phobia questionnaire, those who scored between 21-40 (diagnostic shear score of social anxiety) entered the next stage of screening based on diagnostic interview and evaluated them in terms of mood and personality disorders. Subjects with social anxiety were randomly assigned to three groups of 16 in metacognitive therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy and control groups. Metacognitive therapy underwent 8 sessions of treatment, cognitive-behavioral therapy underwent 12 sessions of treatment and the control group did not receive any specific treatment. The subjects of all three groups completed MCQ-30, FNES_ B, BAI, CAS-1, SPIN and SIAS questionnaires in the first, fourth, eighth, twelfth and three-month follow-up sessions.

Results

results of two-way analysis of variance and regression analysis showed that there was a significant difference between the mean scores of the three groups in the post-test in social anxiety, fear of negative evaluation and uncontrollable metacognitive factor and risk; Both cognitive-behavioral and metacognitive therapy were superior to the control group but no significant difference was observed between the two treatment groups. Metacognitive therapy was superior in reducing cognitive-attention syndrome to cognitive-behavioral therapy and control group

Conclusions

Cognitive-behavioral and metacognitive therapy in the treatment of students' social anxiety disorder and reducing the symptoms of this disorder, have the necessary efficiency and effectiveness
