Abstract

Abstract Body

Sex education is considered as an integral component of social hygiene and public health strategies. Even though traditionally equated with knowledge and understanding of human sexuality, sex education encompasses much beyond. Respect towards the opposite sex, emotional responsibilities, reproductive/sexual rights, birth control, safe sex, responsible sexual engagement and prevention of sexually transmitted diseases (STD) – all fall under the purview of Comprehensive Sex Education (CSE). The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has published International Technical Guidance on Sexuality Education, which “advocates for quality CSE to promote health and wellbeing, respect for human rights and gender equality, and empowers children and young people to lead healthy, safe and productive lives.”

CSE entails a curriculum-driven teaching process about the physical, cognitive, emotional and social aspects of sexuality. The core underlying factors are wellbeing and dignity as well as respectful sexual/social relationships. CSE has shown to prevent gender-based violence, unwanted pregnancies, HIV and other STIs and sexual exploitative behaviors. Culture-sensitive community based sex education incorporated in school curricula has shown to improve communication skills surrounding sexuality, family life and interpersonal relationships. However, the existing stigma and discrimination impede the dissemination of CSE in various countries.

Sex education is much more than “dos and don’ts”. It is indeed the roadmap to healthy psychosexual health. This presentation highlights the evolution and benefits of CSE, the evidence-base backing it up, how it can be integrated in early years of education and finally the route ahead to effectively utilize CSE for sexual wellbeing.
