Session Description
Since 2018, a Japan-Italy joint project team has been implementing the "Theatre for Mental Health Project" where people with mental illness play the major role. In this symposium, the significance of connecting mental health services and communities to promote well-being of individual and society will be presented from an international perspective, as revealed by the project team's analysis of the process, impact and empowerment effects of theater in comprehensive community mental health between Europe and Asia. The encounter between mental health and theater as a high-quality art activity is expected to improve prevention of illness, chronicity, emotional control, self-affirmation, and motivation to engage in expressive activities and employment for people with mental illness. We will also examine relationships with supporters, families, and society, as well as changes in anti-stigma of mental illness, culture, and human understanding.
