Session Description
Fighting against Stigma related to mental illness requires National Mental Health Program & National Mental Health Policy. In the new Mental Health policies & act formulated by developed countries, they have tried to make their fight against stigma more intensive. However, a common mental health program to fight against stigma in developing countries is the need of the hour. There are series of mental health awareness programs carried out in these regions in the form of newspaper articles, books, public meetings and seminars, social-media, print media, tv interviews, sensitizing health policy makers, top administrative officials, Member of Parliament and Assemblies are organized at several levels. Programs involving celebrities, religious leaders and socio-political leaders are part of the active campaign. Sensitizing under-graduate medical students and professional colleagues, and research in the field of stigma should be there on the agenda in coming years in developing countries. The panelists will also discuss the following issues: •Role of faith healers and religious leaders in fight against stigma. •Need for conducting round-the-year program by definite policy making. •The importance of the role of cinema, mass media and social media. •Target group meetings among press-reporters, film-makers, tv reporters, social, religious and political leaders. •To provide the tool-kit and programs to the participants. •Necessity to change several nomenclature, for eg: the name “Mental” to “Diseases of Mind”, ECT to Brief Pulse Therapy, etc. •To fight against Human Rights Commission Encroachment in the treatment of Psychiatric illnesses. •Measuring outcomes of Fight against Stigma programs by involving researchers.

Mental illness is not well understood, it frightens people and often it carries a stigma.

This leads to years to mental illness goes unreported, undiagnosed, and untreated.

It's socially taboo, often viewed as a curse from God, not an illness. It is worth noting here that the smell of a diabetic foot is well tolerated by the society but persons having mental illness are shunned away.

The negative attitudes and beliefs related to mental illness lead to: Fear, Rejection, Avoidance, Discrimination, People’s reactions, Bullying, Harassment, and Violence etc.

The vulnerable targets are youngsters, ethnic minorities, Immigrants, Persons of lower socio-economic strata, sufferers of mental retardation, specific learning disabilities (dyslexia or autism) especially the physically and mentally handicapped.

The various calling names are crazy, psycho/pagal, charya, insane, mental, maniac, etc.

Overcoming stigma in Pakistan;

Stigma campaigns in Pakistan need to target the general population.

There is a need for stronger emphasis on psychiatric education within undergraduate and postgraduate training in Pakistan

Educate ourselves & Stop others from making fun of people who are different

Be compassionate and understand some behaviors of others

Take care in what you say.
