Session Description
One of the main aims of psychiatric treatment is to support recovery of the consumer, promote dignity and the human rights of people with lived mental health experience. While psychiatric treatment in a narrow sense may be provided at psychiatric facilities, recovery should be attained in the real world and needs the collaboration of primary care and the community including the provision of social support. At the same time, high-quality psychiatric treatment is a good starting point for recovery. However, many people with mental health lived experience do not receive the psychiatric treatment they require and psychosocial interventions that deliver holistic care are not readily available. This hampers consumer recovery. There are reciprocal benefits to the collaboration between mental health, social support activities and psychiatric treatment. In this symposium, the merits and examples of collaboration will be discussed. Also the WFMH and the WPA may consider exchanging organization supports to each other. The WFMH may assist the recovery, or mental health orientated parts of the WPA action plans. And the WPA member societies may consider joining the WFMH and intensify the collaborations with the mental health or social support organizations in the region to widen the basis for the recovery of the consumers. This will benefit consumers with mental health lived experience and the two organizations.

Abstract

Abstract Body

The psychiatric treatment should aim at the person’s recovery as its purpose. When psychiatric treatment aims for recovery, it needs support from various mental health and psychosocial services. This means that psychiatric facilities should have good collaborative relationships with organizations engaged in mental health and psychosocial activities. At the same time, mental health and psychosocial activities need a sound basis for psychiatric treatment. Therefore, the benefits of the collaboration are mutual. This is why collaboration between the World Psychiatric Association (WPA) and the World Federation of Mental Health (WFMH) is necessary.

The significant collaboration between psychiatric treatment and mental health and psychosocial activities may be realized as

1. Development of recovery-oriented psychiatric treatment such as a Re-work program (Relapse prevention program for patients who want to return to work),

2. Inclusion of tips to utilize psychiatric treatment in mental health and psychosocial services

3. Active referrals between psychiatric treatment and mental health / psychosocial services

4. Information sharing of activities through congress, meetings, councils, and case conferences

5. Joint appeal to other stakeholders in society.

The WPA and the WFMH may highlight best collaboration practices and create some collaboration guides. The patients/persons and families will benefit from the practical activities of the collaboration. Other societal stakeholders will benefit from the one-voice appeal of the collaboration. The results should be a win-win-win for all.
