The lecture will review socioeconomic trends relevant to the practice of psychiatry and then list tsks which psychiatrists of the future will have to accept in order to make psychiatry a discipline that contributes to the achievement of public health goals. It will draw attention to the need that psychiatrists give more attention to the primary prevention of mental disorders, to the changes which will allow appropriate treatment of people with comorbid mental and physical diseases and to the reduction of stigma of mental disorders. The changes in the organization and content of education of psychiatry at undergraduate and postgraduate level necessary to make psychiatrists undertake these tasks will be reviewed.
