Abstract

Objectives

To examine effects of positive psychology intervention (PPI)for promoting stress management behaviors among working age group.

Methods

This quasi-experimental research was implemented with working age people, at the age of 25-59, who had high stress level. They were divided into an experimental and comparison group of 42 participants each. The experimental group was exposed to PPI that was comprised of various activities such as lecture, group discussion, demonstration, and practice of stress management etc. The intervention was implemented for 12 weeks. Comparison group did not receive this program. Data were collected before and after the intervention the standard SPST-20 and PPSM-scale researcher-developed questionnaire were used. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics: frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation. Inferential statistic used for comparative analyses were paired sample t-test, independent t-test with significant setting at level 0.05.

Results

The results showed that after the intervention, the experimental group had mean scores of stress management behavior with positive psychology approach (positive emotion, positive relationship, engagement, meaning and accomplishment) higher than before the intervention and higher than the comparison group significantly (p-value<0.001). Stress level of the experimental group after intervention was decreased significantly more than before the intervention and comparison group (p-value<0.001).

Conclusions

This study provided evidence showing the effectiveness of PPI for the decreasing of stress level and the increasing of stress management behavior. Thus, the program can be used for stress reduction and coping behaviors.
