Session Description
Background: Late life depression (LLD) is one of the most under-recognised and burning area in recent times among old age population. Population vulnerability, increasing number of denominators, funding scarcity, unrecognised problem statement is some of the potential barrier. Problem statement: It has been noticed that LLD and risk of dementia are closely interrelated. Studies found out that people with LLD have almost 2 times increased risk of developing dementia within next few year. Alzheimer's and Vascular dementia are the most common entity. Interesting to note here that it is vascular dementia which is more common among LLD patient. This can be corroborated to the findings by Alexopopulas, decades ago, but with new rigor and validity. LLD may reflect a prodromal stage of dementia or may act as an independent risk factor for dementia. So, interaction is quite complex and both ways. For FTD or DLBD depression may be the presenting symptoms and a closer look into the heuristic phenomenology is of utmost importance. Expected outcome: In this symposium, we will try to explore the evidence regarding - what are the recent findings stating the fact that LLD harbingers future dementia. We will also discuss clinical points and experience how to tackle with it, when to investigate those subgroups of people and what is the road ahead.
