Session Description
Digital health technologies offer the potential of accessible and scalable interventions that can augment traditional care. The rapid growth in access to and capabilities of digital health technologies presents a feasible route towards augmenting traditional mental health care and bridging the gap between the need for treatment and the capacity to deliver it. In this state‐of‐the‐art,we explore the technologies, the available research evidence and the implementation issues most relevant to integrating digital psychiatry within mental health care. These diverse technologies hold the promise of addressing several important problems in mental health care, including lack of measurement, uneven access to clinicians, delay in receiving care, fragmentation of care, and negative attitudes toward psychiatry.Interest in digital mental health was expanding before COVID-19 and is now rapidly accelerating as researchers and clinicians seek to improve access and quality of care through leveraging technologies.Staying current with new technologies is a significant challenge for physicians. The objective of digitalization in psychiatry is not to replace traditional psychiatric care through digital therapies, but to augment it through innovative interventions Digital approaches have the potential to reach broad audiences with highly individualized care that can respond to an individual’s needs, preferences, culture, learning style, stage of recovery, and clinical trajectory over time. This exposition highlight important directions for digital health intervention research to promote broad adoption and optimize implementation of digital therapeutics for mental health conditions across diverse care settings and populations.
