Session Description
This session is targeted for psychiatrists, health professionals in emergency care and forensic psychiatry, and anyone interested in stigma research. Police are important stakeholders in mental health of a community. As a first point of contact of many patients with emotional disturbances, their knowledge, attitude and behavior towards persons with mental illness will influence the way they handle them. Also, policing is well recognized as one of the most stressful occupations with unique challenges. Due to various vulnerabilities, police personnel with mental illness are prone to develop various psychiatric illnesses. Their knowledge, attitude and behaviour towards mental illness will also influence their help seeking pattern. Stigmatizing attitudes at workplace may lead to delay in help seeking resulting in adverse mental health outcomes including suicide. In this session, we share evidences from our study among Indian Police focusing on their knowledge, attitudes and intended behavior towards mental illness and mental illness stigma at work place.
