Session Description
This symposium will provide important insights into forensic psychiatry. Forensic psychiatry at large can be divided into participation in: (1) criminal legal proceedings; (2) civil and administrative legal proceedings; and (3) correctional treatment settings, with criminal forensic involvement typically receiving the greatest attention. Mentally disordered offenders (MDOs) are often cared for in secure psychiatric environments or prisons. The organization and scope of the services provided differs greatly between countries due to different traditions and legal frameworks. Professor Birgit Völlm will discuss the relationship between mental disorders and violence risk, risk assessment, and the treatment and outcomes of mentally disordered offenders. Although not often utilized, the Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity (NGRI) defense is the most discussed forensic examination that forensic psychiatrists perform. Professor Britta Ostermeyer will provide an overview of the general guidelines of performing forensic psychiatric examinations and then specifically explain how to perform an insanity evaluation in Anglo-American and similar systems. Forensic psychiatry is attracting increased interest from psychiatrists and other health professionals. In addition, technological advancements have provided increased opportunities to learn about forensic training opportunities. Finally, Professor Elias Abdalla-Filho will present an overview of the evolution of the learning resources in forensic psychiatry over the years and discuss current resources.
