Session Description
This intersectional symposium will focus on the need to better develop interprofessional mental health education and models of care, particularly in LMIC. The current focus on psychiatric education for medical students taking place in psychiatric units or hospitals does not expose students to the important role of psychiatry and mental health in the practice of medicine. In addition, non-physician MH providers currently get limited opportunities to work collaboratively with psychiatrists while in training. This results in a focus on treating more severe forms of psychopathology, rather than primary prevention of mental illness and the integration of MH into primary care settings. The role of Lifestyle Psychiatry will be addressed and the opportunities for WPA to take a leadership role in promoting this effective and inexpensive primary treatment as a global public health intervention. Potential action items for the attendees will be discussed, along with examples of current applications.
