Session Description
This intersectional symposium is organized by the Section on Education in Psychiatry and the Section of Preventive Psychiatry. The symposium will highlight the importance of exposing students to preventive psychiatry and mental health promotion while providing two working examples that could be adapted and implemented across different contexts around the world. First, we will report the findings of a study exploring medical students’ views on prevention and mental health promotion in Turkey. Then, we will discuss an initiative in New Zealand called Population Health Intensive Week, which introduces medical students at the University of Auckland to health promotion and population health. Finally, we will present a psychotherapeutic service in Moscow that, for the last 20 years, has provided mental health support to university students with a preventive framework. This intersectional symposium will seek to stimulate a debate on teaching and learning about mental health promotion and prevention and illustrate how these conversations can be translated into practice. Participants are encouraged to bring their own experiences in this area for sharing and discussion.
