Session Description
As of 2021, Colombia, one of the countries with the largest number of internally displaced people, is experiencing a unique migration phenomenon: the forced displacement of 7.6 million Colombian citizens within the country and the massive immigration of 1.7 million survivors of the Venezuela refugee crisis. Survivors of forced migration experience high rates of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder due to the physical, sexual, or emotional trauma they experience before, during, and after their migration process. Healthcare providers and research teams with little awareness on this re-enact these traumatic experiences among individuals, affecting their first impression of the programs and increasing their likelihood of dropping out of their services. We discuss the Principles of Trauma-Informed Care serve as a tool for institutions, healthcare providers, and researchers working with survivors of forced migration so that they can increase the quality of the services they provide by creating safer and more meaningful relationships with their clients. Keywords: PTSD, Trauma Informed Care, Migration, Cultural psychiatry.
