Session Description
INTRODUCTION (5 minutes, José Ramón Arellano Cano) A perspective of the relationship between human rights and mental health care with the specific description of the different internal guidelines on the matter. RACISM IN LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN AND ITS IMPACT ON COLLECTIVE MENTAL HEALTH (15 minutes, Carlos Alberto Franco Chávez) “Race” is a historical mechanism of domination and social exclusion that has remained in force throughout the centuries and that has contributed to making Latin America and the Caribbean the region of the world with the most unequal distribution of wealth. Its impact on collective mental health will be explained. DISABILITY: SEEKING INTEGRATION BETWEEN THE MEDICAL MODEL AND THE SOCIAL MODEL (15 minutes, José Ramón Arellano Cano) The social model of disability postulates that more than a disease should be treated as a condition, to avoid discrimination and the repercussion on people's mental health. Doctors must be trained in awareness raising, dignified treatment and appropriate language according to the International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. We will provide examples of the application of the social model in health care processes. AGING AND DECISION CAPACITY (15 minutes, Nancy Catherine Colimon Ardila) Older adulthood marks a problem of autonomy and freedom of decision-making, for this reason it is important that doctors know the legal aspects and respect for human rights regarding the care of elderly people, altered cognition without being considered dementia. Practical advice will be addressed through clinical cases that stimulate reflection on praxis.
