Session Description
Many researchers are interested in identifying sex differences in the human brain and human physiology, and their relations to sex differences in behavior, to increase understanding of why men and women differ behaviorally, and why many psychiatric diagnoses, neurological disorders and chronic pain disorders show unequal sex ratios. A better knowledge of how male and female brains and physiology differ could provide insights that would help people with these disorders. Whether there are brain differences that relate to behavioral sex differences, such as those in physical exercise’s performances would also be of great interest. The ultimate aim is to use understanding of links between sex differences in behavior and sex differences in the brain to facilitate changes in behavior and reduce psychopathology, as well as other types of disorders, related to the brain. The interactions with environmental factors is also of great interest. Finally, elucidating the molecular, biochemical, and physiological determinants of the biological sex differences is a necessary step toward precision, gender-specific medicine. Prof Toussaint CIMS, Hôtel Dieu University Hospital, University of Paris, France will talk about biological measurements of male and female physiological differences; Prof Potenza, Director, Women and Addictions Core of Women's Health Research at Yale, University of Yale, USA will discuss brain biology and gender with respect to substance and behavioral addictions; Prof. Javier Labad, Spain, will talk about hormones, interactions with environment and gender differences. Prof. Thibaut and Prof. Potenza will co-chair the symposium.
