Symposium of the Section of Psychoneuroendocrinology of the WPA Psychoneuroendocrinology of cognitive, emotional and behavioral responses to stress and resilience: Emotions are psycho-neurobiological states, usually provoked in response to psychological and environmental stimuli, which are processed by cortical and limbic structures in the central nervous system (CNS), which in turn activate the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and the hypothalamic-pituitary.adrenal (HPA) axis, with the consequent repertoire of neurophysiological changes. Symptoms provoked by those changes are also processed in the CNS, associated with cognitive, affective and behavioral responses, constituting the psycho-neuro-endocrinological (PNE) bases of emotions. Adaptive responses to stress are usually characterized by cognitive and emotional processing, which may be involved in the origin of different alterations, including depression, trauma and anxiety disorders, or the development of resilience and more healthy conditions. Therefore, we organized our symposium with the aim to introduce the role of cognitive and emotional processes involved in the pathophysiology of stress, trauma and resilience. Updated information focused on PNE research will be also discussed.
