Session Description
Marijuana was used once in life by 3.9% of the world population according to the World Drug Report (2019), which means that Marijuana is the most cultivated, trafficked, and abused illicit drug worldwide. Its predominant compounds are THC, CBD, and CBNA from more than 90 different types of cannabinoids involved in glutamatergic, serotonergic, noradrenergic, and dopaminergic systems. Due to this complexity, marijuana extracts have important pharmacological properties, which one is the capacity of modulating immune function because these extracts serve as secondary modulators in the immune system. Meanwhile, It is true that THC% has gone up substantially, and that people now have access to more concentrated products that contain THC, such as tinctures, concentrates, wax, and shatter;  and there are definitely legitimate health concerns related to addiction, accidents, and mental health outcomes. Although occasional marijuana use is not associated with clinical or social impairment, prolonged, heavy use is linked to psychological and physical injuries, lower educational levels, low social class, and unemployment. This symposium will focus on epidemiological, biological, and clinical data on marijuana outcomes considering changes in marijuana legalization policies.
