Session Description
Session DescriptionAs the field of infections is vast, this course explores the diagnosis and acute management of persons suffering acute encephalitis, Cysticercosis and HIV. It will be illustrated with clinical vignettes. Whilst encephalitis can result from multiple pathogenetic processes the primary focus will be infectious causes of encephalitis; however, brief discussion of autoimmune encephalitis following herpes simplex encephalitis will be covered. Cysticercosis remains the predominate cause of epilepsy. The presentation and management shall be discussed. HIV remains an important consideration of CNS infection, the management and sequel will be discussed.Learning objectives 1.Acute infectious encephalitis is often a syndrome amenable to anti-microbial therapy, which if instituted promptly improves outcome.2. Molecular techniques and newer serological assays have improved diagnostic sensitivity.3. The current status of HIV globally and its prevalence in the developing world are of vital importance.4. Millions are infected with cysticercosis leading to disability, epilepsy and poor outcome. Medical and surgical interventions shall be discussed.
