Dr. Steinberg is Provost Emeritus of the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research and the Elmezzi Graduate School, Northwell Health, and Professor and Chair Emeritus of the Department of Molecular Medicine at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. Her research for more than 40 years has primarily focused on human papillomaviruses (HPV) and their role in benign and malignant tumors of the head and neck. She is the author or co-author of 105 peer-reviewed publications and 25 book chapters. Her research has been recognized by a number of awards, including the Elliot Osserman Award from the Israel Cancer Research Fund, the Karl Storz Award from the American Society of Pediatric Otolaryngology, the Israel Cancer Research Fund Award for Women of Excellence, and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Papillomavirus Society. She is a Past President of the International Papillomavirus Society. Dr. Steinberg received her Ph.D. in Microbiology from Stony Brook University, studying bacteriophages, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship studying tumor viruses. After two years at Columbia University as a Senior Research Associate, she joined the Department of Otolaryngology at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in 1980 where she began her studies of HPV.
