Z. Zheng

National institute of health National cancer institute, Tumor Virus RNA Biology Section, HIV Dynamics and Replication Program
Dr. Zheng received his medical and virological training at Wuhan University and was a Yale-China Scholar for three years (1981-1984) in clinical virology at Yale University. He served as Associate Professor, Chief of the Clinical Virology Laboratory, and Deputy/Acting Director of the Virus Research Institute, Wuhan University School of Medicine, China from 1985-1990. He received his Ph.D. from USF School of Medicine in 1994. Since then, he joined NIH as an IRTA fellow and later a senior staff in the NCI Laboratory of Tumor Virus Biology. He accepted the offer in 1999 from NCI to head the Tumor Virus RNA Biology Section and has remained in this position to date. He first identified RNA cis-elements regulating papillomaviral RNA splicing in 1996 and later RNA splicing promotes translation of E7 protein. His research interests center on RNA processing, RNA-protein interactions, and tumorigenesis of papillomaviruses and Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus. He organized the 24th IPVC in Beijing, 2007. He was a recipient of the 2009 NCI Director's Award, 2010 NIH Award of Merit, 2016 NCI Outstanding Mentor Award, and 2016 NIH Asian and Pacific Islander American Organization Outstanding Scientific Achievement Award. He was elected to the American Academy of Microbiology in 2014. Web: https://ccr.cancer.gov/zhi-ming-zheng
