Dr. Weatherhead is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Medicine in the Sections of Pediatric Tropical Medicine, Pediatric Infectious Diseases and Adult Infectious Diseases at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) in Houston, TX USA. She is board certified in internal medicine, pediatrics, pediatric infectious diseases, and adult infectious disease with a sub-specialty certificate in tropical medicine and travelers health (CTropMed). Dr. Weatherhead is the Director of Medical Education at the National School of Tropical Medicine (NSTM) at BCM and teaches didactically on topics related infectious diseases, tropical medicine and global health as well as lab-based parasitology techniques. She provides in-patient and out-patient clinical care at the Harris County Health System Adult Tropical Medicine Clinic as well as the Texas Children’s Hospital Pediatric Tropical Medicine Clinic. As a physician-scientist her lab investigates the underlying pathways that cause parasite-induced morbidity and aims to discover interventions that will prevent the development of devastating, life-long disease as a result of parasite infections in children.

Dr. Weatherhead will review the importance of Tropical Medicine education for health care professionals in regions of low parasite burden and present strategies to enhance learning of and exposure to parasite-related healthcare concerns.
