Jerry J Zimmerman, MD, PhD, FCCM, is a Professor of Pediatrics and Anesthesiology, and a senior faculty member of the Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine, Seattle Children’s Hospital at the University of Washington, School of Medicine. Zimmerman received BS and PhD degrees at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, WI, majoring in biochemistry, oncology and organic chemistry. He also received an MD degree and pediatric residency training at the same institution. Subsequently he received fellowship training at Children’s Hospital National Medical Center that included research experience at the National Institutes of Health. Zimmerman is an active attending physician at Seattle Children’s Hospital and Harborview Medical Center Pediatric Intensive Care Units (PICU) in Seattle, WA. Previously he served as Division Chief for Pediatric Critical Care Medicine at the University of Wisconsin and University of Washington Schools of Medicine. As Co-editor of the textbook, Pediatric Critical Care, he is familiar with the academic landscape of pediatric critical care. Currently Zimmerman serves as a satellite site Principal Investigator for the Collaborative Pediatric Critical Care Research Network (CPCCRN), and the Pediatric Acute Lung Injury and Sepsis Investigators (PALISI) Network. He is principal investigator for the NIH/NICHD, Life After Pediatric Sepsis Evaluation (LAPSE) investigation. Since 2010, he has served in leadership roles for the Society of Critical Care medicine and is currently President for that organization. He has served on the American Board of Pediatrics, Critical Care Medicine Sub-Board in various capacities since 1992. Zimmerman has been an Editorial Board member for Critical Care Medicine and Pediatric Critical Care Medicine since 1993. In 2009 he received the American Academy of Pediatrics, Section on Critical Care, Distinguished Career Award. With over 30 years of experience, Zimmerman serves on many national leadership committees to advance pediatric critical care.
