Royal Danish Academy – Architecture, Design, Conservation Architecture
Jakob Brandtberg Knudsen. Dean, Architecture. Royal Danish Academy– Architecture, Design, Conservation. His primary research interest is implementation of science in bridging architecture and public health to make affordable, healthy and sustainable homes and institutions in tropical climates. He has extensive experience from building practice in Europe, Asia and Africa as head of Ingvartsen Architects. He is currently heading the construction of 110 novel designed homes built across 67 villages in Tanzania as part of the Star Homes Project. The houses will be used for a 3-year randomized controlled study evaluating the effect of a good house on the child health compared against 440 control houses. The design of the home aims to reduce rates of malaria, respiratory tract infections and enteric diseases through robust design solutions such as improved screening, ventilation and sanitation. The project has been developed by a cross-disciplinary team of architects, physicians, social scientists and entomologists, alongside local community leaders and stakeholders.
