Paediatric Gastroenterology
Marco Gasparetto is a consultant paediatric gastroenterologist at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, and a Honorary Associate Professor at the University of East Anglia (UEA), in the United Kingdom. He graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Padua, in Italy, in 2008, with a thesis entitled “Inflammatory bowel disease: a study on its evolution from childhood to adulthood”. This research was further developed and led to the publication of an original scientific paper in the “Journal of Paediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition” in 2010. He completed his specialty degree in Paediatrics with an interest in Paediatric Gastroenterology in 2014 (CCT equivalent). Dr. Gasparetto has been dedicated to clinical and translational research in the field of paediatric gastroenterology, focusing especially on inflammatory bowel disease. In 2013, he started a clinical and research fellowship in Cambridge (United Kingdom) and in 2019 he completed a post-grad MD Degree at the University of Cambridge, with a project on prognostic biomarkers in paediatric IBD. He was awarded the Ralph Noble Prize for best scientific dissertation of the Academic Year 2018-2019. The findings of the research undertaken by Dr Gasparetto during his doctoral degree were later published in "Gastroenterology". Dr Gasparetto gained valuable clinical experience as a Consultant Paediatric Gastroenterologist at The Royal London Children's Hospital, Bart's Health Trust, from 2019 to 2022. He has co-authored several scientific publications on paediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and digestive endoscopy. He has been an active member of the British and European Societies of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (BSPGHAN and ESPGHAN) and he currently chairs the Research Committee of BSPGHAN and an ESPGHAN special interest group for basic science and translational research. He is also Associate Editor of the Journal of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (JPGN). Dr Gasparetto regularly contributes to educational and teaching activities at UEA as well as across national (BSPGHAN) and European (ESPGHAN) networks. He is involved in ongoing collaborative research work with the University of Cambridge, focused on the pathogenesis of paediatric inflammatory bowel disease, and on diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers for this condition.

Session Description
Medical scientific research has changed and progressed drastically over the past decade, alongside increasingly fast technological developments. This research symposium will provide attendees with the latest updates in clinical and scientific research methods and topics across PGHAN. Lectures will cover a broad range of highly relevant, current topics including wet lab technologies, organoids, high throughput data analysis, artificial intelligence, precision nutrition, and clinical trials. The symposium will end with a round table and a discussion with the audience about what ESPGHAN can offer to support high quality research and train his younger Members. A new ESPGHAN Research Curriculum will be presented and discussed.
