Professor Cant has practiced medicine for 40 years; in 1990 he came to Newcastle to set up 1 of 2 national referral centres for treating children with severe immunological disorders, now with a team of 11 Consultants and 6 Fellows pursuing active research into the molecular basis of novel PIDs, the biology and life impact of PIDs, improving HSCT for PID, better recognition and treatment of severe infections and new understandings of allergy in children. Newcastle is now a world leading centre for radical curative treatments for childhood immune disorders with over 90% success. From 2006 to 2009 Professor Cant was President of the European Society for Paediatric Infectious Diseases (ESPID). Since 1999 Professor Cant has been a member of the European Society for Immunodeficiencies (ESID) Board chairing the BMT and then Education Working Parties. From 2014 to 2018 he served as ESID President. He has developed ESID scientific meetings with greatly increased participation, as well as the setting up of an online educational programme and annual summer school. Professor Cant has been awarded grants of over £6 million for research into primary immune deficiencies, HSCT for PIDs; leading to over 300 peer reviewed papers, most recently leading work on the delineation of Activated Protein Kinase Delta syndrome. From 2016 to 2019 Professor Cant co-ordinated ERN RITA (European Reference Network for Rare Immunodeficiencies, Autoinflammatory and Auto-Immune Diseases) which seeks to ensure PID patients across Europe have equal access to the very best diagnostics and treatment.
